Abstract : Gwerz contain two strata of tropes. Their presence is proportional to the gwerz’s age and inversely proportional to its complexity. One stratum derives from the oral tradition, the other from the sphere of reading and writing. Although this suggests the ‘lament’ genre has ancient origins, this is not necessarily true of the texts collected by Luzel. The hypothesis put forward here is that the Breton ‘lament’ genre, which is characterised by tragic themes and composite rhetoric, was established in its modern form at a time when oral culture was still very prevalent among the rural gentry but written culture had already gained a foothold, in other words, as far as we can tell, between the 15th and 17th centuries.
