The liminal position of Irish cinema: Is using the English language a key to success?

Having been a British colony until 1921, Ireland has a special status within Europe as the only existing European country to have been a colony in the twentieth century. Gaelic, the national Irish language gradually became a secondary language whereas English, the language of the colonizer, became the normal means of expression on the island. In addition the extreme poverty in Ireland encouraged large numbers of its population to immigrate, especially to the United States. Irish cinema as a result was highly affected by the socio-economic evolution of the country. However, what for a long time had been the sign of domination was turned into a remarkable asset. Being able to speak English today is essential for actors in any country. In addition English is an important cultural marker. This paper will show how Ireland has won a place for itself in Anglophone film production in Europe and in the United States, all the while infusing a special sense of its identity in its films, in particular through its accents. Moreover, what could be viewed as American imperialism can also be looked as Irish culture that has permeated American culture. Thus, Ireland has been able to maintain its special relationship with Hollywood better than any other European country and at the same time cultivate its European aspects.
L’Irlande a un statut particulier au sein de l’Europe. Colonisée par la Grande Bretagne jusqu’en 1921, elle fut l’unique pays européen à être une colonie au vingtième siècle. La langue des irlandais, le gaélique, est progressivement devenue une langue mineure tandis que la langue du colonisateur devenait le moyen d’expression le plus parlé dans l’île. L’état de pauvreté du pays donna également lieu à une émigration très importante, en particulier vers les Etats-Unis. Le cinéma irlandais a été fortement marqué par l’évolution socio-économique du pays, mais ce qui fut longtemps effet de domination s’est cependant transformé en formidable atout. Parler anglais constitue aujourd’hui une aubaine pour les acteurs de tous les pays. C’est aussi un marqueur culturel important. L’objet de cet article sera de montrer comment l’Irlande a su conquérir sa place dans la production cinématographique anglophone en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, tout en insufflant ses particularités identitaires dans les films, notamment par le biais des accents. Ce qui a pu être vécu comme impérialisme américain est aussi à regarder dans l’autre sens, la culture irlandaise ayant imprégné la culture américaine de multiples façons. Il en ressort que l’Irlande négocie mieux que tout autre pays européen ses rapports privilégiés avec Hollywood tout en cultivant son appartenance européenne.
