Photographic Technology in Ciaran Carson’s Poetic Imagination

This article discusses the importance of the photographic medium in Ciaran Carson’s poetic imagination. Using the concept of the aura developed in Walter Benjamin’s writings on photography, I show that the photographic artefacts featured in Carson’s texts deny their viewers (the poet, and through Carson’s ekphrasis, the reader) a revelation of their intrinsic meaning or value. It is rather photography as a historically developed technology that furnishes Carson’s imagination with a store of poetic images – as opposed to material pictures – borrowed from alchemy and ancient metamorphoses for the pleasure and puzzlement of the reader. Thus the disappearance of the aura from modern photographs that Benjamin mourned is used by Carson as poetic material, or as a pre-text that reestablishes the aura, understood as a genuine encounter between text and reader.
Cet article étudie l’importance de la photographie en tant que moyen de représentation de la réalité dans l’imaginaire du poète nord-irlandais Ciaran Carson. En s’appuyant sur le concept de l’aura tel qu’il a été développé par Walter Benjamin dans ses écrits sur la photographie, on montrera que les objets photographiques qui apparaissent dans les textes de Carson dérobent aux regards de leurs spectateurs ainsi que, par l’entremise de l’ekphrasis carsonienne, du lecteur, leur signification profonde. C’est bien plutôt la photographie en tant que technique dotée d’une histoire qui fournit à Carson les images (comprises comme métaphores vives, et non objets) qui nourrit sa poésie. Empruntées à l’alchimie et aux métamorphoses, ces métaphores intriguent et ravissent tout à la fois le lecteur. Ainsi, la disparition de l’aura des photographies modernes regrettée par Benjamin est-elle récupérée par l’imaginaire de Carson et transformée en pré-texte d’une rencontre authentique entre texte et lecteur, par laquelle l’aura est réinstaurée.
