Abstract : The purpose of this article is to examine, in light of information provided by the work of Breton lexicographers in the 18th and 19th centuries, certain approximations commonly used to refer to ancient agricultural techniques in Brittany. For example, in both popular and scholarly texts, ‘hoe’ is sometimes presented as écobue and sometimes as étrèpe. What light can these lexicographers shed on the true nature of such tools and the uses that were made of them?
