The EEC supported GALATEA project (Project number 5293, ESPRIT II) aims at promoting the application of neural networks by European industries. Within this project, two industrial vision applications have been selected with the purpose of investigating the practical utility of neural net software and hardware implementations in an industrial environment. These applications are: Surface Mounted Device Technology and Automatic Video Grading of Oranges. The corresponding main industrial vision problems addressed are briefly reviewed. Neural net solutions are investigated. In addition to the very popular back-propagation supervised learning, non supervised techniques are also developed. Two of these are presented in some details.
