Abstract : It is common knowledge that Breton folk songs, called gwerzioù, tell a true or supposedly true story. Passed down through the generations by word of mouth, some have enjoyed a lengthy run in the Breton oral tradition. However, this transmission from one memory to the next over many decades and even centuries in some cases is thought to have inevitably impacted their content. Hence, because they come with this caveat, these pieces have long been neglected by historians. However, Donatien Laurent’s work in this field has changed this situation. By cross-analysing the events presented in the songs with written archive documents, he has been able to prove their veracity. The present study was in line with Laurent’s work. The results confirmed that a priest from Pont-Melvez was assassinated in 1670 by another cleric over a matter of jealousy between two families.
