Abstract : The map of places that will be compiled in this article will show Breton speakers’ knowledge and representation of space as vernacular knowledge expressed in Breton. As such, it falls within the domain of vernacular geography in the sense of collective-meaning geographic knowledge as distinct from geographers’ knowledge. With the sudden potential mass expansion at individual level of geographical and mental horizons in the 20th century and the more recent promotion of the image of Bretons as being both ‘rooted in and open to the world’, we seek to determine and understand the image that corresponds to the current map of places presented by our participants through the linguistic lens of Breton at the beginning of the 21st century. In other words, we try to identify how this century of ‘openness to the world’ manifests in Breton vernacular knowledge.
