PREDICTING FISH PRODUCTION AND MARINE BIODIVERSITY CHANGES THROUGH THE 21ST CENTURY

Résumé

Will there be fish in the ocean to feed our children and grandchildren, and can the marine environment supply goods and services for them while maintaining biodiversity? Recent, high-profile scientific publications have questioned it, but the science on which such predictions rely is at best, very incomplete. My PhD project is designed to provide a new, better defined, and founded modelling approach to such predictions. My intention is to bridge the gap between ocean and land in order to provide better predictions about future fish production and marine biodiversity changes. Including the consideration of coastal productivity will provide a new driver in the modelling approach, and this is important given the strong impact that variability in environmental production has on fish production. Another noteworthy aspect of my future study is the consideration of the trophic aspects, such as if there will be sufficient food for a predator species once its distribution shifts with climate change. This will be done through the use of ecosystem models, well designed to address such questions. I intend to develop a case study for the Pacific North-West to establish the modelling approach and then, to consider impacts of climate change and demography on marine ecosystems on a global scale.
