This communication aims to question the meaning of karate in France today. We present the results of qualitative interviews and seek to show that the orientations of the current practice of karate is very diverse and varied. It seems that there is a differential ownership of the practice periods and geographic areas. However, karate would provide values established as common practice, such as respect or citizenship, which was chanting as instruments of legitimation of the practice in the fields of sport and education.
