Abstract : In August 1903, Julien Godest (1849-1932), who was a peasant, met François Jaffrennou, alias Taldir ab Herninn (1879-1956), then a very active member of the Breton movement (emzao), who encouraged him to put pen to paper and write his memoirs. Godest compiled a 350-page autobiographical manuscript that was rich in heterogeneous content, including narrative materials, songs and medicinal recipes. However, in order to publish this work in the journal An Oaled, Jaffrennou, its director, substantially revised the manuscript (lexicon, orthography, style) and made extensive cuts to its content. The end result was the publication in 1929 of a few dozen pages that had been ‘rectified’ by Jaffrennou. An analysis of the choices made by Jaffrennou during this process provides an insight into the neopaternalist view adopted by the Breton movement regionalists towards the Breton people during that period.
