Abstract : In his great work, Coëtanlem quotes the fabulist La Fontaine extensively. As I searched through the pages of the dictionary for the author’s Breton sources, I sometimes wondered whether the mountain would only yield a mouse. Indeed, at first glance, the yield may appear quite meagre. However, it is possible to glean quite a precise picture of what speaking Breton – and about Breton – meant for Monsieur de Coëtanlem. Because orality was central to this work. The lexicographer’s French and Latin sources may all have come from books, but his Breton sources were exclusively oral.
