Abstract : The aim of this doctoral study over the past two years has been to understand object-language transmission processes from an ethnological perspective. Based on fieldwork mainly comprising interviews with families, it has analysed the family transmission systems of Breton in Brittany (France) and French in Saskatchewan (Canada). This paper reports specifically on the different modes of transmission that were observed in the case of Breton. Based on these descriptive models and on one example in particular, it shows how the tripartite of transmission, which combines a gift, a reception/appropriation and a return, applies to the Breton language.
