Abstract : General Gallifet mostly left a warmonger reputation, especially known for having repressed the Communards. However, as a Minister for War in the Waldeck-Rousseau government, in a letter to the President of the Council at the end of Dreyfus’ second conviction in Rennes, he formulated, with remarkable strategic intelligence, the conditions for getting out of the Affair “pardon for Dreyfus”, combined with an amnesty for the officers who had engineered his loss. The French historiography keeps it secret, but we may consider this Army discreet final warning to the Republic as an alleviated form of a Coup.
