Abstract : Dialectometry is a method of comparing data from different varieties of a language and assessing the degree of similarity by calculating the distance between them. In the case of Breton, this approach has been applied to data from the Nouvel Atlas Linguistique de la Basse-Bretagne (Le Dû, 2001) through making new use of the Damerau-Levenshtein distance, which not only establishes linguistic distance but shows the different operations involved (Brun-Trigaud, 2014). This technique, whose workings are explained in the article, was applied in an exploratory approach to a sample of data, delimited to the centre of the Breton-speaking area, drawn from the NALBB. The many resulting transformation operations formed an analysable sub-corpus. This information was exploited to report the phenomena that underpin linguistic distance in this space. The detailed analysis showed a clear separation of the main results into three categories: vowels, rhotic consonants and non-rhotic consonants. Their respective importance varied within the material analysed, but all were organised according to the Pareto principle. In addition, an examination of these transformations identified several trends in the Breton dialects of Central Brittany, namely vowel centralisation, strength of tonic accent and variation in the realisation of rhotics.
