Abstract : This article is an analysis of data contained in the following linguistic atlases: the Atlas Linguistique Roman (AliR), the Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE) and various other atlases of the Iberian Peninsula, France, the British Isles and the Alps. The present interpretation is based on a motivational analysis of the Romance and Celtic lexicons, taking into account lexical stratigraphy and diachronic and synchronic variations. It is still common practise to undertake the study of specific linguistic areas without considering their genetically different bordering linguistic areas. This is often the case with the Celtic areas, which are often left aside and thus remain true Atlantic fringes. A comparison of the Celtic and Romance areas opens up a very promising new research field. This joint research of a Romanist and a Celticist aims at highlighting the presence of cross-border areal concordances in the Atlantic zone. Its goal is to shed a different light on the dialectal distribution of Western Europe. For the past fifteen years recent discoveries in archeology, paleoanthropology, diachronic linguistics and genetic phylogeography have given rise to new interesting comparative parameters. Such new elements will bring forth a better understanding of the linguistic geography in the Atlantic zone and give rise to a reassessment of the subject.
