Le "tuteur-logeur" revisité : le thiaman sénégalais, passeur de frontières du Maroc vers l'Europe

Abstract : Draconian immigration policies introduced by European countries have rendered the whole business of ferrying people across borders a critical issue for migrants desperately seeking to get to Europe. This article seeks to shed light on the figure of the Senegalese thiaman, a frontier ferryman operating from Morocco to Europe. Their position within Senegalese migratory networks will be examined, comparing them with other, earlier figures, the jatigi and the coxeur, who have played pivotal roles in migration and population mobility in West Africa. The impact of migration policy on the way transit networks to Europe are being re-structured will also be addressed.
