Abstract : Conjugal life is living together as two people. However some couples live in "partial noncohabitation" with alternating periods of living toghether and separation, although this does not challenge the dominant model. One of the partners (often the man) is regularly absent while the other (the woman) looks after the home. The reasons for this situation are related to career impositions or opportunities, that are or are not accepted in the name of the common good. Nevertheless this can offer the opportunity to (re)negotiate the relationship to the other, or to oneself. The forms of non-cohabitation differ depending on whether it is a life style or a passing phase and thus contribute to (re)defining conjugal living conditions, emphasising more or less on the individual or the joint aspect of daily life.
