A relational approach to the museum exhibition: rethinking the conception of the visitor experience in art museums through Conceptual Art

At the beginning of the study is contemporary art, divided between admiration and incomprehension on the part of the public. These reactions take roots in the beginning of the 1960s and at the end of the 1970s in a set of practices called “conceptual art”. The primacy being given to the idea on the realized object, conceptual art raises the determining question of the experience from that of the artist to that of the public. Thought as a particular form of relation to the world, the experience in this work of research is understood through the enactive framework as the cognitive, bodily and emotional dynamics of a person. The conduct of stimulated recall interviews with visitors to recent exhibitions, mainly art exhibitions, describes the dynamics of their experiences and reveals a tension between visitors demanding access to the artist's own world as enjoyed by curators and the belief shared by artists and curators of a mediation that hinders the relationship to the works leading them to refuse any explicit form of it. Considering the notion of coupling from enaction as an inevitable and reciprocal influence on a person's perception of the world, the world seen as an interweaving of its own worlds invites to consider a systemic approach to the exhibition. This thesis defends a relational approach to the exhibition as a method of conceiving and experiencing the world in which the relation to the object is no longer exclusive and can pass through the relation to the relation (metaliction) of a person to the artist's own world. This is presented as an aid to the understanding of the works allowing the public to make sense (lictions) in its own way and to make artworks of the exhibited objects. Finally, considering narration as fundamental to human thought, the writing of a scenario in the form of a collective narrative is presented as a methodology that accompanies the conception of an exhibition. The arrangement of a personal story within an experiential framework can provide the audience with a new experience that is close to "reality", whether real or fictional.
