Prototype of a digital multilingual phraseological dictionary

Résumé

Our aim is to present an on-line digital multilingual phraseological dictionary, which would be easy to use and free of the constraints imposed by the linear presentation. The corpus of the current program is based on English, French, German and Russian idioms containing animals. The program presented here is a first prototype, enabling multidirectional search of phraseological equivalents in any of the four languages mentioned above. Each idiom will be presented as a part of a system, with the information about its relationships and links to other units with similar meanings. The user can choose from a list of matches to find that which best corresponds to the initial idiom. Our aim is to make the search as efficient and as user-friendly as possible. Both foreigners and native users will have access to the same information. Every idiom will be treated in the same way. It is important to take into account all of its properties from its semantics to its pragmatics, passing by syntax, combinatory and context. Every aspect of each idiom will be explained in detail. Thus, each entry will contain the following information: notions, explanations about the meaning, etymology, folk etymology, typological lexical and grammatical modifications, quasi-synonyms, antonyms and false friends, and examples. We hope that the program will be a useful tool not only for its practical applications, but to make theoretical searches. The scientific interest of this work consists of determining the image role in the real meaning in an idiom. This theoretical side is closely linked to its use: the program will help the user to make an informed choice when it comes to choosing the best match for the figurative expression s/he wishes to translate. Such a dictionary would be beneficial for any speaker of each of the four languages and particularly for language students, researchers and translators.
